CONTEXT, NOT COMPARISON
There is no “right” number.
Your experience is individual. Frequency doesn’t measure satisfaction, connection, or wellbeing.
Population surveys describe groups. They cannot tell you your personal lifetime total or an accurate peer percentile from these inputs.

About the assumptions: This calculator is an arithmetic exploration, not a scientifically validated prediction of your personal history or future. Published survey percentages are research-based, but the formulas and adjustment weights used to turn them into personal estimates—including lifestyle effects, age patterns, relationship-duration effects and sensitivity ranges—are illustrative assumptions, not scientifically established personal effects. Changing these settings explores a possible scenario; it does not establish what happened or how likely an outcome is. Basic mode simply calculates totals from the frequency you provide.
Basic: reported annual frequency × completed active years. At 0% month-to-month variation, the same fixed rate is extended to the selected horizon. Above zero, each modeled month receives a reproducible random multiplier uniformly between 1 minus the variation and 1 plus it. Thus 50% means 50–150% of the selected monthly average. Fractional monthly equivalents are retained and totals are rounded only for display. The selected frequency is the expected average, while any one simulation can be higher or lower. This represents uneven activity, not a confidence interval or reconstructed history. “Try another variation” generates a new pattern; ordinary edits retain it. Every hidden relationship and advanced input is ignored.
Advanced / own frequency: preserves reported historical averages, optionally by relationship period. Illustrative age, duration and lifestyle assumptions shape projections.
Advanced / circumstances: integrates separate rates before and after the entered situation date. No date means the current situation affects only the current rate and future; history uses your selected previous-history profile. Current circumstances are never silently applied to all previous years. Dates use your age today as an approximate anchor.
Survey inputs: Natsal-3 tables 1–2 in Wellings et al., BMJ (2019), UK 2010–2012, ages 16–44. Shares reporting no sex / 10+ occasions in the past four weeks: women, married/cohabiting 15.1% / 13.0%, single/divorced/widowed 46.3% / 13.4%, overall 29.3% / 13.2%; men, respectively 12.8% / 15.5%, 47.1% / 13.2%, and 29.2% / 14.4%. Remaining respondents form the 1–9 category. The default blend is a simple equal average of these shares, not a population-weighted pooled estimate.
From shares to counts: annual reference = [(share in 1–9 × your selected middle count) + (share in 10+ × your selected high count)] × 365.25 / 28. Defaults are 4 and 12. These counts are assumptions, not observed means, so the result is an approximate scenario rather than a fitted statistical model. Dating uses the unmarried group; a relationship without stated cohabitation and undisclosed status use the overall group. Married and cohabiting share one group. Applying that group from “together since” is a proxy for the relationship period; it does not claim marriage caused a change.
Age and duration: the illustrative age factor is exp(−0.00045 × (age − 30)²), anchored at age 30. The curve can be switched off; it is not fitted to age-specific survey data. The duration effect defaults to off. The relationship factor is 1 + d × exp(−years together / 2), with d chosen in the form. Neither coefficient is estimated from the survey. Duration affects the dated past period and the future in circumstances mode. In own-frequency mode the historical period is normalized to your stated average. Marriage subtotals overlap relationship totals and are not added again.
Lifecycle evidence: Schröder & Schmiedeberg (2015) found early relationship declines, but no significant independent marriage/cohabitation effect. The model does not add a wedding-day multiplier. Future projections assume the current situation continues.
Lifestyle: Advanced only and opt-in; illustrative adjustments per slider step: 4% per libido step, 2% nightlife, 1.5% dating apps, 1% extroversion, with social adjustments quarter-weighted for partnered profiles. In circumstances mode, lifestyle applies throughout active history or from your chosen age, including the future. In own-frequency mode, reported history is preserved and the future lifestyle adjustment ramps in over five years. The optional age fade scales only the lifestyle adjustment, linearly from the selected fade age to the chosen remaining influence at 80; it stays at that level thereafter. A constant pattern keeps the adjustment unchanged. The same selected lifestyle and status-based weighting are assumed throughout its chosen period; these are scenarios, not reconstructed personal history. The dating-app neutral baseline is Never in partnered profiles and Occasional otherwise. It is determined by the current status, never by edit history. Manual slider values are preserved.
Uncertainty: the shaded future band is ±25% sensitivity, not a confidence interval or an individual probability distribution. Historical estimates also have substantial uncertainty. The survey includes people who have never had sex, so using its all-respondent shares after a personal active-start age is an imperfect match. Cross-sectional associations cannot establish the effect of entering a relationship for an individual. Demographics do not apply country or ethnicity multipliers. These data are historical, not a current global calibration.
Privacy: inputs stay in browser memory, with no storage or submission by this calculator. Reload or reset to clear.
Data currency: Natsal reports its fourth-wave datasets are expected in late 2026. This prototype still uses the older published third-wave summaries. Sources checked 16 September 2026.
